European Biopic Pool

Genesis

At the beginning of the story there was a German project which we have started three years ago. It was called “Zeitzeugen Biografie Portal” (www.zeitzeugen-tv.com). The portal was grounded on thousands of documentary films and interviews with remarkable personalities. Thomas Grimm and his Zeitzeugen-Studio in Berlin have produced these materials for the big German TV channels and other customers for more than 25 years. However considering seriously all the audiovisual material you could see that a great part of these personalities were internationally acting people, born as a German in Prague, studying in France and living as an artist in Barcelona. The second question was linked with the bulk of the material. Some years ago we published a catalogue to present it to the public but the catalogue became very fast outdated.

From print to the web

With the growing internet use we were able to solve the problem of an up to date presentation of our films to the public. Presenting the different biopics and other biographical material in the internet we realized the chance to interlink the different biographies. By this means we create a new quality of a unique audiovisual biographic Who is who. The idea of an European biographic portal was born. The majority of the personalities in the portal were European women and men. It was evident that such a portal could also contribute to strengthen the European identity of its citizens. With this idea in mind we applied for a grant from the European commission which was accorded at the end of last year. The name of the project is “European Biopic Pool” which we want to form during the next three years.

Lifting the treasure of biographic cultural content

It is our goal to pool the audiovisual biographic material from the main national archives, film produ-cers, institutions, TV stations, and other sources (www.biopicpool.com). In a second step we will interlink this content and make it usable to the European and international public.

A key feature in this process will be the multilingualism of the portal which will be realized with the help of highly sophisticated content management systems. Our final aim is that all our partners can integrate its content in the portal in its national language and after a short time of editing it will be accessible for all European and other users all over the world. Currently we already work together with the national film archives of Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Luxembourg and some other national and international content owners in Europe, the United States and Russia.

Cooperation offer

We are convinced that especially the members of the International Association of Oral History have access to interesting audiovisual biographic material which could be included in the biopic portal. Simultaneously an international biography portal would be a rich source for oral history research and teaching. Thus, we would like to suggest establishing cooperation in order to help both side grow. Beyond that we would like to learn which ideas and propositions the members of the association have for the further configuration of the portal. Please contact us for further information and propositions.
